More on Somatic Experiencing

Therapeutic Services Available

Informed by a deep understanding of the nervous system, principals of attachment, and psychodynamic practices, our work with clients focuses on discovering connections between the conscious and unconscious, the past and the present, patterns and inconsistencies, as well as what can be learned from our bodies. We place equal importance on having a top down approach - what the brain knows - as much as a bottom up approach - what the body makes apparent.

Our work is rooted in the belief that all parts of the self are welcome. All parts of the self are encouraged to voice their needs. Too often we ignore, judge, and even place blame on the part of our self that is causing us pain - the very part that need to be nurtured and even thanked.

We invite you to bring your knowledge of yourself, as well as a sense of curiosity and compassion towards the parts of you yet to be more deeply understood. We will bring our insight on the conversation between what the body shows and the mind tells.

Trauma, stress and disconnection can take away agency and our ability to live a full life; our goal for you, regardless of what brings you to therapy, is to reclaim the power of choice in your life and to help you step into a state of being enlivened and fully embodied.

Individual psychotherapy services are being offered in person and virtually.

Somatic Experiencing is a therapeutic modality that cultivates curiosity about sensation and explores information being revealed by the body.

Clients are invited to tune into cycles of activation and deactivation taking place within their physiology. Clients can expect to open the lines of communication between their observing mind and their felt sensations. Movement is often introduced as it supports integration and release of tension and constriction.

As the name suggests, Somatic Experiencing is more experiential than traditional talk therapy, and clients will work in the here-and-now to process what is brought to light during the session in a safe and manageable way.

Somatic Experiencing lends itself to significant and lasting change. It is a modality that can be used over a lifetime or very briefly. Regardless of duration, Somatic Experiencing builds resiliency, restores cohesion and reestablishes balance for all clients who participate.

Somatic Experiencing is first and foremost a trauma therapy. If you have experienced a recent or historical trauma, you may find SE more helpful than talk therapy alone.

Couples who come to therapy learn ways to develop and maintain healthy relationships. For couples and families who are experiencing a loss, an extreme stressor or a life cycle event involving adjustment, relational therapy will help solidify functional ways of engaging with each other and coping with the present challenge. For couples and families that have struggled with impaired communication and flawed boundaries, sessions will address improvements that can be made to benefit each individual as well as the unit as a whole.

Common reasons couples and families seek therapy include but are not limited to:

  • the birth of a child
  • balancing the demands of child-rearing while maintaining a romantic relationship
  • infidelity or similar breach of trust
  • strained relationship between adult siblings or parent/adult child

Couples/families can be seen in person or virtually.

Good parents need help, too. Good kids can have a hard time. Parenthood is complex, often feeling both good and hard at the same time. Parenting consultation sessions provide support as well as practical guidance to navigating the ups and downs of your parenthood journey.

Common reasons parents seek out consultation include one or more of the following challenges:

  • navigating a separation or divorce
  • establishing and maintaining healthy boundaries and routines with their children
  • developmental markers such as toilet-training, welcoming a new siblings and starting school
  • developing successful communication between parents around differences in child-rearing styles
  • acute or chronic health concerns for parent or child
  • addressing the root cause of challenging or concerning behaviors in children
  • understanding triggers that decrease patience, enjoyment and connectedness in parenting
  • understanding teenager behavior, emotions and maintaining a relationship with your teen
  • introducing and facilitating a healthy relationship with screen time and technology

Parenting consultation services are available for families living both inside and outside of Rebecca's areas of licensure (NY, CT, NJ and MA.)
